DERMOTT COMMITS TO COLGATE Close your eyes. Can you see the gym at the Varsity Training Centre? If you’re Krista Dermott, you know every inch of it. It’s the kind of familiarity that results from four years of training at the Brampton scholarship factory.
The 17 year-old Miltonian has been a regular pupil of Geoff Schomogyi, Head of Off-Ice Instruction at Varsity, for the past four hockey seasons, and for good measure, the past two summers as well. Her hard work has paid off.
Dermott has committed to Colgate University where she will study and play for the Women’s Ice Hockey Team. After impressing scouts with her play for the Brampton Jr. Thunder of the Provincial Women’s Hockey League and Team Ontario at the Canadian Under-18 Championships it was no surprise to those familiar with the PWHL loop. "Krista's a high-energy player who pressures well down low and has all of our speed, tempo, pace requirements," explained Ontario Women's Hockey Association head scout/lead evaluator Brian Hart. "She's also really focused and totally supports her teammates."
A diligent student as well as a dedicated athlete, Dermott has posted 3 goals and 7 assists in 13 games this season, her second with the Jr. Thunder. Dermott stays busy away from the rink by playing other sports. The list includes basketball, soccer, volleyball and badminton -- in which she claimed OFSAA 'C' flight silver in mixed doubles play this past spring. (She's also a multi-time League Cup champ in soccer.)
For Dermott, the hectic schedule of a multi-sport 17 year-old is not the result of an inability to focus on one sport, but rather the desire to make the most of being young and athletically gifted. Her approach is the same, regardless the sport. “I'm just looking to play as hard as possible and be a team player. I want to come away with no regrets.” http://www.miltoncanadianchampion.com/news/article/133124
