BUSY OFF-SEASON AT VARSITY HOCKEY This summer has seen our players achieve a few goals that we at Varsity are very proud to have helped them accomplish and we just wanted to take a moment to share a few of them with you.
Nick D’Agostino, after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the seventh round, was immediately flown out to attend a mini-camp for the organization’s top prospects. The experience was a whirlwind of hockey and excitement for the St. Michael’s Buzzer, but it didn’t change Nick’s work habits. Upon his return, he could be found right back in the gym at Varsity, training for the upcoming season, his last with St Mike’s, as he will be attending Cornell University on an athletic scholarship starting the fall of 2009.
You know you’re in Canada when the sports highlights in mid-July include intra-squad games for the national junior team. If you were paying attention, you might have noticed Varsity’s Chris Terry, who currently plays for the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers, and University of Michigan forward Louie Caporusso, who spent the camp skating on a line with Kyle Turris and John Tavares. The final roster for the national team won’t be announced until after a camp held closer to Christmas, but a source close to the team believes both Terry and Caporusso have a legitimate shot at a roster spot. Chris Terry will have two new yet familiar teammates when he returns to Plymouth in the fall. Varsity athletes Tyler Seguin and Scott Wedgewood, both 16 year-olds who were taken in this year’s OHL Priority Selection, have now signed contracts with the club. Seguin, Plymouth’s first round pick, is expected to get a chance to play on the first line with Terry, the teams leading scorer last year, while Wedgewood, a goaltender, may have to split time between the club and its affiliate as the Whalers already have two goaltenders returning to camp. Andrew Martin, who both trains and instructs in Varsity’s Elite Training Program, has signed a contract to play for the Belfast Giants. The deal to play in the UK-based Elite Ice Hockey League, includes an opportunity to pursue a Master’s Degree when not at the rink. Martin, who graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, where he attended on an athletic scholarship, had spent the last two seasons playing for three teams in the East Coast Hockey League. We are very proud to pass along that Danko Mironovic, a four-year member of the Elite Training Program and Varsity’s instructional staff, has signed his first professional contract. The 6’3”, 210 pound defenseman, who captained the OPJHL’s Vaughan Vipers last season, will soon be reporting to training camp for the Fort Wayne Komet Hockey Club of the revived International Hockey League.
Congratulations to all of our players and we wish you continued success throughout the upcoming season. Finally, we would also like to recognize two members of our staff who have recently returned from some exciting work. Ken Farrell, head instructor since 2004, has just returned from two weeks in Norrtalje, Sweden where he was invited to go and work with some of that country’s top 14, 15 and 16 year-olds. Closer to home, Adrian Lomonaco, Varsity co-director, spent a few days in Kingston this month working with the Canadian National Women’s Team as a consultant. The opportunity arose after Jana Hefford, arguably one of the best female hockey players in the world, started attending weekly sessions with Lomonaco.
