ESSERY COMITTS TO ST. LAWERENCE The staff here at Varsity Hockey would like to congratulate Kyle Essery on accepting a full scholarship to St. Lawrence University for the 2010/11 season. Kyle who is currently playing his second year of Junior A for the Georgetown Raiders is having a breakout year. This past summer Kyle spent his days training hard at Varsity to prepare for this up coming season. “Varsity has helped me stay in shape and continue my development so I’m prepared for every shift. The training staff is great, they stay on you and make you work hard so that you get the most out of what you're putting in.”
Kyle's scholarship is an achievement on many levels. James Richmond, Kyle's current Head Coach and GM of the Georgetown Raiders commented on Kyle's achievement. "Kyle is a complete team player who never puts himself ahead of the team. He is a dedicated athlete who's work ethic, commitment, and dedication to his team is evident every time he steps on the ice. Kyle's accomplishment is a good example of what an individual can accomplish when his team's goals are his priority. '.
A native of Mississauga, Kyle is in grade 12, finishing his high school at Loyola Catholic Secondary where he is maintaining a 78% average. Not only is Kyle excelling on the ice this year with the Raiders, 20 points (8 goals 12 assists) in 18 games , he realizes the importance of his education. Essery an 8th round draft pick of the Belleville Bulls in 2007 decided that he wanted to pursue the U.S. college route instead of playing Major Junior in Canada.
Essery, listed at 5’8 175lbs is considered small in stature to some, but he makes up for it with his incredible work ethic on and off the ice. When asked what he thought of the environment at Varsity, his response was, “The atmosphere at Varsity is phenomenal with other guys around you working as hard as you, which just makes you want to work that much harder. Varsity has helped prepare me for the next level and has helped me understand what is expected and what I need to do to continue to progress my hockey career”.
All the staff at Varsity is happy to see Kyle achieve this milestone goal. Director of Off-Ice Training with Varsity Geoff Schomogyi commented "It is a great accomplishment for Kyle and we look forward to seeing his development continue in coming years.”
