VARSITY ATHLETES REPRESENT ONTARIO For Nick D’Agostino it is starting to become a regular occurrence to dawn the red and white as he just competed in his second World Junior A Challenge in Camrose Alberta. D’Agostino, who was named assistant captain, led Canada East to a bronze medal with a 9 to 1 victory over Belarus.
Canada East is made up of Tier II Jr. A players from Ontario, Quebec, and the rest of the Eastern provinces. The World Junior A Challenge is in its 3rd year and showcases junior players from all over the world. This year teams from U.S.A, Russia, Belarus, Germany, and Canada West competed for the 3rd annual, with U.S.A beating Canada West in the final 7 to 1.
D’Agostino a draft pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins this past summer had a great tournament with 3 assists in 4 games while playing a big role on Canada East’s defense core. Nick who will be headed to Cornel University in the fall of 2009 was honored when head coach Mark Grady asked him to be an assistant captain. D’Agostino also wears an ‘A’ on his jersey this season with his junior club the St. Michaels Buzzers.
Another Varsity athlete will also be wearing the red and white this upcoming December will be Tyler Seguin who was just recently named to Ontario Under -17 Team. This year, the U-17 World Hockey Challenge will be held in Port Alberni British Columbia, starting December 28th. The U-17 is a tournament that is held every year showcasing the best talent around Canada and the world for players under the age of 17. Past Varsity athletes to participate in this event include the likes of Kevin Baker, Chris Terry, and Michael Zador.
Seguin who was drafted by the Plymouth Whalers in the first round 9th overall this past spring, is off to a great start in his young OHL career. Tyler, a 6 foot 175 lbs speedy forward has collected 3 goals 11 assists for 14 points in 20 games this year. Seguin, who is a native of Brampton, ranks 13th among all rookie scorers in the OHL so far this season. Congratulations Nick and Tyler!!!
