| Kevin Ridgeway - Student Spotlight
|
It seems that Kevin Ridgeway, Varsity Hockey’s Player of the Month for August, has already outgrown his one-level hockey town in Grimsby after six years at the game. The 2004-05 season saw 10-year-old Kevin achieve 56 goals and over 70 assists for the Grimsby Peach Kings, so next week he will be trying out for the coaches of the AAA team in St. Catharine’s.
An overall good kid, Kevin tries his best to listen, learn and improve in everything he does. He achieves good grades in school, participates in other sports like basketball, soccer, and golf, and Director Lucky De Grazia says, “he has a great work ethic and he’s developing good quickness, speed and edges. He obviously loves learning.” Taking a hint from his favourite NHLer, Joe Sakic, Kevin says his best moment in hockey so far was scoring the winning goal in a tournament with 20 seconds left in the championship game after dekeing around the defensemen. “It felt good,” says the modest centre. Of Varsity, Kevin and his mom are happy with the training he received. Kevin trained privately and in several camps the summer of 2004, and when he returned, the Rideways received many comments on his significant improvements. “Varsity’s really great,” says Kevin. “Thanks Lucky.” Kevin has some advice for kids wanting to excel in their sport. “Listen to the coaches.” Kevin should know a thing or two, since it’s clearly working for him.
